How to declare AI-generated text and images

Amazon requires a declaration for AI-generated text, images and translation separately, “even if you applied substantial edits afterwards”, and asks which tool in free text (up to three). Failing to disclose can mean the book is removed without warning, and repeated breaches can close the KDP account.

What Amazon is asking

This is a field on KDP’s Content page, internal to Amazon. It is not printed in your book and it is not shown on the product page. Editing the book heavily does not change whether you must answer.

KDP’s disclosure is private to Amazon. It does not replace any reader-visible marking another law may require.

For a typical Shadow Writer book

If you generated the manuscript here and did not rewrite most of it by hand, the truthful text answer recorded from a live KDP Content page (11 September 2026 notes; walked 9 September 2026) is:

  • Text: yes — entire work, with minimal or no editing.
  • Which tool (up to three names):Shadow Writer AI, plus the model that drafted this book —DeepSeek V4-Flash on the free plan, orGemini 3 Flash on a paid plan.
  • Images: yes, if you used our cover. NameIdeogram V3 for the art andShadow Writer AI for the title type we composite on top. If you have no cover from us, answer from whatever image you actually upload.
  • Translation: no, unless you translated the book yourself with another tool. Shadow Writer ships English only and does not translate.

If you later rewrote large stretches by hand, you still disclose that AI generated the text. The “how much” answer may change; the obligation to name the tool does not go away because you edited.

What we do not do

  • We do not upload to KDP for you.
  • We do not fill Amazon’s form, pre-tick a box, or submit a disclosure on your behalf.
  • We do not print an AI notice inside the book. KDP’s question is on their dashboard, not in the file.

Where this wording comes from

The “even if you applied substantial edits afterwards” requirement, the separate text / images / translation questions, the three-tool free-text field, and the removal / account-termination penalty were read from the live KDP Content page on 9 September 2026 (STATUS.md B12b). The recommended “entire work, with minimal or no editing” answer is the same note. Model names are the pins the engine actually uses (DeepSeek V4-Flash free, Gemini 3 Flash paid; cover art from Ideogram V3).
